Dwarf Cavendish is a widely cultivated and commercially important variety of the Cavendish group. Young plants often display maroon or purple blotches on their leaves. Commonly grown across Asia for large-scale production, they’re also used as tall ornamental plants in tropical garden borders. However, they require proper winter protection.
Basrai is a key commercial banana variety belonging to the Cavendish group, primarily cultivated in Maharashtra. Its dwarf height makes it less susceptible to wind damage. The variety is favored for its good-sized bunches and well-formed fruits, making it a preferred choice for commercial farming.
Robusta bananas are large and versatile. They are green when unripe and turn yellow upon ripening. These bananas are excellent for eating fresh and are also used in baking, desserts, fruit salads, compotes, and as culinary complements.
Lal Velchi, or red banana, is a prized and popular variety in Kerala and Tamil Nadu. These bananas are sweet, orange-yellow in color, and aromatic. Commercial cultivation is mainly concentrated in the Kanyakumari and Tirunelveli districts of Tamil Nadu.
Safed Velchi is considered a premium table variety. Grown mainly in Thane and Nasik districts of Maharashtra, the bananas are medium-sized and take about 13 months to mature. The plant features a slender, yellowish-green pseudostem and a reddish margin on the petiole, which makes it easily identifiable.
Rajeli Nendran bananas are known for their variability in plant height, pseudostem color, bunch size, and other traits. These bananas have a thick green skin and a distinct neck, turning buff yellow when ripe. Even after ripening, the fruit retains a starchy texture, making it unique among banana types.
Grand Naine, a member of the Cavendish group, is one of the most widely cultivated banana varieties globally. Known for its consistency and high yield, it is favored by commercial growers for its productivity and adaptability.
Poovan is a major commercial variety grown across India, especially in Tamil Nadu, which leads in its cultivation. Often grown as a perennial crop, Poovan bananas are also used in the banana leaf industry. The fruit is slightly acidic, firm, and carries a pleasant sour-sweet aroma.
